Part of the lesson was for kids to design/draw/write abot their own donut. Day was a little wild because there was a substitute teacher running the class. Actual exchange I had:
One girl drew a triangle donut, so I asked the class what was special about triangles?
Different kid- “They’re the Illuminati”
Me-“no... but they are the strongest shape”
Substitute teacher outta nowhere- “that’s because they point upwards at the point towards...
*big pause* (I can tell he really really wants to say God)
...the sky, which signifies strength”
Me- “STRUCTURALLY... they’re the strongest shape structurally...”
I’m surrounded by children and the dumbest thing said was by an adult.
( Also didn’t help that the regular teacher didn’t warn the sub about the behavior disorder SPED kid in the class. Apparently a chair had already been thrown across the room before I got there and I still had to deal with him wandering around talking throughout my lesson. I do not envy teachers)

my daughter’s tea cher had to physically remove a kid from the class cuz he threw a chair at one of the girls. Some of these first graders are ANIMALS

Not to be “that guy” but, the USA is so fucked if that is what the education system is coming to.

the right has been relentlessly pounding the drum about how teachers are little more than public-union-protected leeches which means no one wants to see them paid appropriately for how important their job is.

My wife’s a teacher. Not in Detroit but she has Detroit kids.(school of choice and whatnot) You are so correct at this point I’m pretty sure they want us dumb. It’s a good day if no blood is spilled and this is 9th grade. She's got six years to go but I already told her to get out.

My mom and sister are both elementary school teachers. It’s a thankless job that deserves so much more respect than it gets.

Eh, this was just an odd experience. Substitute told me before class that he had never taught in an actual position, and wanted to start a private preschool in a church.
As for SPED kids, I’m personally not a fan of “least restrictive environment” as I find it ends up restricting the learning of the other kids in the class. Then again, I’m not a teacher and I don’t have any training/education in elementary education.

Exactly, couldn’t have said it better myself.

Are you kidding me? The fact that the kid even knows what the fuck a donut is is a miracle these days.
But hey! If you want a REAL education for your kid, just send them to one of those charter schools your tax dollars are now paying for (by robbing the public system.) Well, except those charter schools aren’t required to accept your kid, aren’t required to teach to any standards, are allowed to teach your kid that Jesus rode dinosaurs...
